Devil In The Backseat

Das Ende dieses Jahres bringt uns einen Haufen guter Oi/Streetpunk Platten. Loikaemie kam schon vorbei, und uach Tech 9 und Hardsell gehören hier ganz sicher auch dazu. Tech 9 ist eine der ältesten Streetpunk Bands aus den Niederlanden. Ich glaube das Gesamtalter der Band ist schon über 160 Jahre, haha. Die Band kündigte letztes Jahr schon ihren Abschied an, aber dennoch spielen sie noch immer Shows, okay schon weniger - aber sie können es eben einfach nicht lassen. Und das ist eigentlich auch gut so, da sie immer besser werden. „Devil in the Backseat“ ist ihr viertes Studioalbum und ist zugleich auch ihr bestes Album bis jetzt. Manche Lieder bescheren mir Gänsehaut. Am Anfang hatte ich etwas Schwierigkeiten mit der Stimme von Hein, weil er auf diesen Aufnahmen doch etwas anders klingt, aber nach ein paar Mal reinhören hat sich das Problem gelöst. Es ist eben gewöhnungsbedürftig. Die Lieder beinhalten richtig fette Sing-a-longs. Der Coversong „I Wanna Live“ von den Ramones ist genial. Diese Band ist mit diesem Album unsterblich geworden.

Seit einer ewigkeit im underground aktiv, kommt dieser benelux-formation derzeit dank "i scream records" wohl endlich die beachtung zu, die sie verdient. schließlich entwickelte man nicht nur seinen stil vom hardcore-beeinflussten oi hin zu knackigem punkrock, sondern überstand sogar die ersten gehversuche samt "lost and found"-knebelvertrag im konstanten line-up. TECH 9 wurden seit ihren arg unausgegorenen anfangstagen mit jedem album besser und legen mit "devil in the backseat" den vorläufigen höhepunkt ihrer karriere vor. mit dem opener "bombs away" hat man dann auch gleich einen richtigen hit am start, der mich famos an einen D.O.A.-song gleichen namens (!) erinnert. anyway, diebstahl haben TECH 9 nicht nötig und unter den 13 tracks tummeln sich noch jede menge knaller ähnlichen kalibers. zum beispiel der titelsong, in dem gitarrist jack van den bosch zu höchstform aufläuft. da fällt sogar das RAMONES-cover "i wanna live" kaum auf und fügt sich nahtlos in den kontext der scheibe ein. "devil in the backseat" ist ein absolutes pflichtalbum für freunde melodischen streetpunks mit schmackes statt tralala. sogar die texte kommen so sympathisch-belanglos daher ("detroit angel"), dass ich nur ein fazit ziehen kann: TECH 9 sind eine dicke empfehlung wert und den prolo-kollegen von DISCIPLINE bedenkenlos vorzuziehen. willkommen in der ersten liga!

Tech 9 fristen ja irgendwie ein Schattendasein im Hause I Scream, kein Wunder bei solchen Schwergewichtern, wie Discipline, Deviate oder auch Agnostic Front, aber vielleicht änder "Devil In The Backseat" ja etwas an diesem Umstand.

Man weiß gar nicht, welche Musikstile man hier aufzählen soll, man denkt, es könnte Rock'n'Roll im Stile von Smooth & Greedy sein, Streetpunk geht aber auch, Hardcore-Zitate finden sich auch, also eigentlich alles geboten, wenn man sich auf ein Album beschränken möchte.

Auch textlich alles dabei von schnellen Autos, Frauen, Politikern als Pest unserer Zeit, auch hier läßt man kein Klischee aus. Das geht weiter mit dem Artwork, das fast Rock'n'Roll-mäßig gezeichnet ist, aber auch nur fast und genau dieses "fast" zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durchs ganze Album:

Zwar lassen die Herren kaum ein Klischee aus den obengenannten Richtungen aus, gehen damit aber so charmant um, daß diese nicht plattgeritten werden oder gar der Peinlichkeitsfaktor hervorgekramt werden müßte.

Mit Schwung gehts an die 13 Songs, die zum Teil recht hymnenhaftig sind, aber doch nie bemüht wirken. Einziger Schwachpunkt, wenn man so mächte: Das "Sägende" in der Sängerstimme, so einen Stil muß man schon mögen, aber der Rest der Mannschaft reißt das voll raus, so daß man fast von einem idealen Hitalbum sprechen kann.

Fazit: Wer Smooth & Greedy, Discipline und OS 101 mag, wir an diesem Album nicht vorbeikommen.

Devil In The Backseat

Irgendwo zwischen Streetpunk, Rock'n'Roll und Punkrock geben TECH 9 aus Holland mit ihrem neuen Album mächtig Gas und können auch einigermaßen überzeugen. Die Spielfreude und Power die man von dieser Richtung erwartet bringen sie ohne Frage mit, was im Endeffekt auch ihres großes Plus ist. Dazu kommen auch die meist mächtigen Mitgrölrefrains, die man schon nach zwei Mal hören mitsingen kann. Allerdings lassen sie jede Innovation vermissen und die Songs sind meistens doch recht simpel gestrickt und nach ein paar Sekunden weiß man meistens schon, wie er weiter bzw. zu Ende geht.

Ein paar mehr Knaller wie "Fifteen Minutes of Fame", der für mich das absolute Highlight der Platte ist, hätten "Devil in the Backseat" sicherlich gut getan. Im Endeffekt also ein nettes Album, dass über weite Strecken dann aber doch ein bisschen zu Durchschnittlich ist um wirklich aus der breiten Masse herausstechen zu können. Fans der Richtung sollten aber trotzdem mal reinhören, denn wie schon gesagt, die nötige Power und Spielfreude bringen sie ohne Frage mit, nur beim Songwriting könnten sie eben noch ein Stück weiter sein.

I remember reading somewhere that the members of Tech Nine wanted to stop the band when they turned 40 or something. Well I guess not cause here they are again with good new album called "Devil In The Backseat". Throughout the years they added more and more melody to their style. Their first record "Scars On The Inside" was straight up hardcore. "The Winner Takes All" and "Last Line Of Defense" showed a band searching for a good balance between the melody of oi and punk and the rawness of hardcore. Well with "Devil In The Backseat" they finally found that balance. Which results in thirteen excellent songs. "Bombs Away", "Devil In The Backseat", "Fifteen Minutes Of Fame", "Detroit Angel" and "I Wanna Live" are all bound to make a club full of angry skins and hardcore kids go wild... Hein's voice also improved a lot, he's not just yelling and screaming anymore. Alltogether this album surprised me alot. The front and back artwork look allright, but the inside of the booklet is embarrisingly ugly. They should've looked a bit more into that. Besides that an excellent album! (IZ)

I think every kid around leaning towards good quality music should get this at ones. Really! TECH-9 unlike its country pals of Discipline and Hardsell tends to play more classic ¾ with a less approach to Oi! influences ¾ punk music, sounding in the vein of bands like A.F.I., Rancid and Dropkick Murphys. Its music is built with few hardcore and Oi! tunes placed over a thick carpet of punk rock chords, sometimes the band have a tendency to play similar guitar riffs with a feeling to the almighty The Clash… the harsh voice together with the groovy rhythms and melodies make this album super enjoyable full with chances to dance and sing-along. They even throw some catchy ska influences into songs. Twelve songs with lyrics talking about the proud of playing punk rock, a big fuck to politicians, life, friends and other cool issues. "Devil In…" also has an amazing cover song of I Wanna Live of The RAMONES. Like the song Come On, Come On says: "You call my music simple… well that’s all right with me"… and that’s all right with me too guys because this is PUNK ROCK and the rest is bullshit!

Los chicos malos de Holanda están de regreso después de un período de ausencia desde el "Last line of defense", pero ahora es comprensible, seguro que estuvieron trabajando muy duro para esta nueva bomba, pues la mejoría es muy notoria en cuanto a la música y a la voz, este sin temor a equivocarme es un disco más maduro... en cuanto a las letras, ya sabrán, ese resentimiento working class y antisocial siempre presente y que nunca se debilita para seguir la luchar contra lo que uno sabe que está mal como en "Murder in the first degree" o "Didn't see it coming", otras más divertidas como "I'll never drink again" y las demás más bien personales como "Detroit Angel" y "You don't wanna see" que son fáciles de entender. 12 completamente nuevos himnos del streetpunk + 1 cover especial a The Ramones, "I wanna live", quizás en honor al fallecido Joey Ramone y en agradecimiento por la música que dejo, o ve tu a saber por qué, pero lo que si se es que lo tocan de maravilla. En hora buena para los Tech 9, uno de mis favoritos por siempre, nunca voy a cansarme de esas guitarras!

The Dutches' music is built with few hardcore and Oi! tunes, placed over a thick carpet of punk rock chords. Sometimes, Tech-9 has a tendency to playing music with an evident resemblance to the almighty, The Clash. The vocalist's harsh voice together with the groovy rhythms and melodies make of this a super enjoyable album, full with chances to dance and sing-along. They even throw some catchy Ska influences into some of the songs. Twelve songs with lyrics talking about the proud of playing punk rock, a big fuck to politicians, life, friends and other cool issues. 'Devil in the Backseat' also contains a great cover song called I Wanna Live of The Ramones. Like the song Come On, Come On says, "You call my music simple, well that's all right with me". and that's all right with me too guys 'cause Tech-9 is Punk Rock and the rest is just bullshit!

Beim ersten hören, wollte ich kaum glauben, dass es sich um die ehemalige Lost And Found Band aus Holland handelt, denn auf ihrem 96er Debut Album machten die vier Jungs knüppeligen NYHC, der mit den neuen Songs absolut gar nichts zu tuen hat. Umso schwerer fällt es mir auch, die neuen Sachen zu beschreiben und so nenn ich es mal eine Mischung aus Oi/Street-Punk mit einem kräftigen Schuß Rock´N´Roll alter Schule, kein Wunder, dass "Ramones" gecovert werden. Richtig gut gefällt mir das Klische Layout, welches auch im "Old School" Stil aufgemacht ist (Flammen, Würfel, Dragster, Fahnen, Höllentor u.v.m.). Musikalisch haben sich "Tech 9" weiterentwickelt und machen sich damit sicherlich viele neue Freunde. Mir gefiel das neue Album beim ersten Hören sehr gut, was aber von Mal zu Mal nachließ.

Wasn’t it Tech-9, one of Holland’s oldest hardcore bands around, that threatened to quit as soon as one of the band members would reach the age of 40? I think it was.Not that anybody actually believed that statement, because the band still is one of the most dedicated live acts around and can be found on stage practically every weekend in venues throughout Holland and Belgium. As if that isn’t enough, Tech-9 comes up with a new CD as well, the successor of Last Line Of Defense, which was sort of a musical turning point for the band. Tech-9 took a more melodic turn and Hein even started 'singing' in stead of screaming. As if Tech-9’s contribution to the Oi Tribute had focussed the band on old heroes again. With Devil In The Back Seat, Tech-9 continues to travel in the chosen direction. We’re talking streetwise punkrock, stuffed with backing vocals in almost every song. You can already picture crowds raising their beers and singing along to songs like Come On, Come On, I’ll Never Drink Again and I Wanna Live. Productionally, Tech-9 sounds better than ever. The slight overload of reverb on Hein’s vocals takes some getting used to, but as a whole the band sounds more typical than on previous recordings. It’s clear the band’s not due for retirement. Not by a long shot. In fact, Tech-9 might just become the oldest band in the genre.
